Kandy is a one of major city and the Hill Capital of Sri Lanka. The city located in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. It is the second largest city in the country after Colombo.

It was the last capital of the ancient kings’ era of Sri Lanka. Kandy The hill capital is major tourist destination. 115km from Colombo and 106km from Bandaranaike International Airport. The Surrounding hills give the city tropical vegetation.
Kandy Famous for tourism because of Climate, cultural, Arts and Crafts, Spices and many more. Its climate is tropical rainforest. Kandy located in the centre of the island and in a high elevation. Because of that the City has a relatively wetter and cooler temperatures than that of the tropical climate. But not in the rest of the country, especially the coastal regions.
The city of Kandy lies at an elevation of 465 metres (1,526 ft) above sea level. Its plan developed around two open spaces. An elongated square, at the end of which are the administration buildings of the old capital, and an artificial lake that is quadrangular in form. A public garden adds to the openness of the city’s spatial organization.
Kandy Today
Kandy has now grown out to encompass Peradeniya (home to the University of Peradeniya and the Botanical Gardens). Katugastota to the north and east to Kundasale, Tennekumbura and Gurudeniya. Dalada Maligawa and Lake are the thing come to mind when the name Kandy heard. During July/August annual Esala Perehera takes to the streets of the city. In this period Kandy is full of foreign tourists and local Pilgrims.
Ancient Kandy
Historical Kandy is the last Capital of King Wickramabahu (1357-1374 CE). At the time it was named Senkadagalapura. These include naming it after a brahmin named Senkanda who lived in a cave near the city, after a queen of King Wickramabahu named Senkanda or after a coloured stone named Senkadagala. In 1592 Kandy became the capital city of the last remaining independent kingdom in Sri Lanka. Even after the coastal regions had been conquered by the Portuguese. The last ruling dynasty of Kandy was the ‘Nayaks’ of Kandy. While the Kingdom preserved its independence until it finally fell to the British in 1815.
